One Day Itinerary for Holland, Michigan
Whether you’re in town for a quick getaway or just passing through, Holland has plenty to offer for a fun and memorable day.
While most tourists visit the Dutch attractions—Windmill Island Gardens and Nelis Dutch Village—I decided to skip them on the day we went there. Here’s my perfect, non-touristy, one-day itinerary:
1. Brunch at Dutch bakery
Kick off your day with a delicious brunch at Deboer’s Bakery North, a true institution in Holland.
This family-owned gem has been around for four generations, and it serves amazing fried chicken tenders. Seriously, the seasoning on them is so good, that no dipping sauce is needed. Their fresh-made bread, bagels, split pea soup, and authentic Dutch pastries are also delicious.
Just know that it’s a popular place, so you’ll probably have to wait a bit. Their hours are also very limited – 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
With kids: Order them fresh-squeezed orange juice or lemonade. It’s so good!
2. Relax on a golden sand beach
After a satisfying brunch, head over to Holland State Park for some relaxation on their big, beautiful, golden-sand beach. It’s one of the most scenic beaches along Lake Michigan, with stunning views and plenty of room to stretch out. It’s hard to believe you’re not on the coast!
While there’s no shade or lifeguards on duty, the serene environment more than makes up for it. So, bring your sunscreen and maybe a beach umbrella!
With kids: The beach is super accessible, and there’s even an on-the-sand playground to keep the little ones entertained while you unwind.
3. Take a Picture with Big Red
No trip to Holland is complete without snapping a photo with Big Red, the most photographed lighthouse on Lake Michigan. Located in Holland State Park, Big Red is a local icon and a must-see for visitors. The bright red lighthouse against the blue of the lake is the perfect backdrop for a keepsake photo.
4. Go Shopping
After your beach visit, head downtown for some shopping. Start your stroll on 8th Street, the main drag, and then venture over to River Avenue for a few of my favorite spots. Check out Oak + Leather for unique gifts, Le Bon Macaron for a sweet treat, and Gezellig for beautiful plants and gifts. I ended up going home with stoneware salt and pepper shakers and a sweet plant with pink veining.
With kids: Don’t miss the Holland Peanut Store, an old-fashioned candy store and nut shop where they can pick out some sweet treats!
5. Stroll Hope College Campus
Take a stroll through the beautiful Hope College Campus in downtown Holland. This historic campus is known for its stunning architecture, vibrant student life, and rich history. Established by Dutch immigrants in 1866, the college has a strong liberal arts program and a welcoming community feel.
With kids: If you have preteens or teens with you like I did, this is a great opportunity for them to experience a college campus up close—it might just inspire them!
6. Eat at a Brewery

For a relaxed dinner, head to Hops at 84 East. They have a great patio if the weather is good and fantastic pizzas, burgers, and margaritas for people who aren’t into beer.
With kids: There are plenty of kid-friendly options on the menu, like delicious mac and cheese or a classic burger!

Catch every beach sunset when you stay in one of the two Holland Camper Cabins. Located in Holland State Park, these cabins give you the cozy feel of camping but with beds, a mini kitchen, electricity, and heat. Plus, you get water and lighthouse views and are just steps away from the beach.
With an average nightly rate around $100, it’s an affordable way to enjoy the great outdoors! But note that there are only two cabins, so make sure to book well ahead of time. They start taking reservations a year in advance.
